I can’t remember a recent movie in which I vacillated so much between despising it and finding it bizarrely endearing. I love the ambition here. But I’m not sure it totally lives up to what the filmmaker was trying to do. There are some wonderful scenes, particularly in the latter half of the film. But the beginning’s long stretches of sustained awkwardness make it difficult to take seriously at first. Which throws off the whole tone of the movie. And that is unfortunate, because the ending is somehow – again, bizarrely – really beautiful and poignant.
What a strange movie. I hated this when I first started watching it, and was prepared to totally bash it. But after having seen how it’s all put together, I can’t say I’m not somewhat taken by it. Just a little bit.
