I stopped this movie half way through because I felt like I needed to watch the film that it was based on, The Room. The Room is one of the worst movies ever made. And I am glad I did that. To truly appreciate The Disaster Artist, it’s best to have some context. In the “Making Of” doc, Franco mentions wanting to retain the passion and emotion of Tommy Wiseau and his movie. And I think they accomplished that. It wasn’t just pure criticism. While many laughs are had at Tommy’s – and The Room’s – expense, Franco also highlights the determination, drive, and heart that it took to produce such a god awful piece of cinema. And not only does Franco deliver as a director, but he straight up NAILS the performance as well.
