Micro Review – Tully

I don’t know if I’ve seen a movie that so accurately captures the insanity of parenthood like Tully does. I found myself laughing at non-funny moments in this film, purely because of the realism (and ridiculousness) of it all. Charlize Theron and Mackenzie Davis are both great. If I wasn’t a parent, I’d probably think they overdid things a bit. It’s pretty harrowing at times. But that’s the reality of having kids. Sure, bringing life into the world and shaping them into human beings can be an incredible, life-affirming experience. But it’s not all sunshine and roses. It can be very difficult, very stressful, and sometimes it feels like you’re drowning. Tully was able to truly show the range of emotions that all parents feel, particularly from the mother’s perspective (geez, it doesn’t paint dads too positively, huh?). This is an emotionally engaging film that anyone with kids will appreciate (even if it’s sometimes hard to watch).
